Inspiring others

A visit from Jon Macken (5th July 2023)!

As an end of year treat, we had a lovely visit and presentation from retired footballer Jon Macken. Currently the manager at local club Witton Albion, he was able to share with us stories from his succesful career playing in the English top flight. From his days as an academy graduate at Manchester United, through to his goalscoring exploits in derby matches for Manchester City and even international honours. Jon as discussed how his desire, commitment and determination were key to overcoming barriers in his life and helping him achieve his dreams. The children also asked some great questions and it was brilliant to find out about some of the interesting players and managers Jon had played for and against, including Christiano Ronaldo and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Following the visit, Alna Jackson who is a director at Witton, gave a small talk about children at school being involved at the club. Please check your emails for more details.

A visit from Pete Mitchell (8th July 2022)!

As the end of term approaches we were delighted to welcome to our school Paralympian Pete Mitchell. After 2 years of  Covid preventing us from having special visitors, it was great for the children to meet a professional athlete like Pete in the flesh. Pete shared a brilliant assembly with us all about his career in cycling and the different events and places he has competed with his partners. It was fascinating to find out about the life of an elite level athlete and the training and preparation that they undergo. Pete also took some brilliant questions from the children and was able to inform us further about his life and experiences as well as share some of his medals too!

A visit from Julie Grundy!

In our penultimate week of term we were very fortunate to have a visit from football coach and Liverpool academy manager Julie Grundy. Julie spoke to us about her career as a footballer and her journey into coaching after finishing her playing career. We found out about how she had to work a full time job along side playing football so she had enough to earn a living. It was also fascinating to hear about the current superstars she has worked alongside such as England captain Steph Houghton who she coached at Leeds. The children asked some brilliant questions and very much enough their inspirational talk.

A visit from Jenna Downing

On 12th March this year we were very lucky to have a vist from world champion inline skater Jenna Downing. She old gave a superb assembly sharing her journey from childhood to superstar. Along the way we heard about how she was told girls couldn't skate, that she was too small, too young and even about her battles with illness. All of this only went to motivate her to succeed. She even pulled the skates on for a demostration at the end!

A visit from Pete Mitchell

On the 28th November we had a special visitor come to our school. Pete Mitchell is a cyclist who rides for the Great Britain Paralympic team. He led an assembly where we watched a video of his race at the Olympics and learnt about his training. We had chance to ask him questions and some of us even got to hold his medal!

A visit from Beth Tweddle

On the 29th November, 10 children from Year 5 were invited to Comberbach Primary School. Here they watch an assembly led by Beth Tweddle. She talked about her training regime and her experience at the Olympics. Later, the children had a question and answer session focussing on inspirations.

A Visit to Manchester Velodrome

We were very lucky to recieve tickets to watch Pete Mitchell cycle in the National Track Championships at Manchester Velodrome. The children entered a competition where they had to write a letter explaining why they deserve a ticket and how Pete had inspired them. The chosen children spent a day at the velodrome watching a range of exciting races.
