Mrs Brady - Glitter Graphics

Welcome to the Year 2 class page.

Our topic this term is:

Where in the World are we?

20th March 2018

Over the last half term the children have been working on a water dance to Saint Sean’s Aquarium from the Carnival of the Animals. Take a look at the video of our dance at the bottom of the page.

15th March 2018

What an amazing day at Anderton Boat lift we had today! Take a look at the at video at the bottom of this page to see what we got up to.

March 1st 2018

Today was world book day. Thank you to everyone who helped sort out costumes for the children. They looked fabulous!

Throughout the day we took part in speaking and listening activities where we talked about our character and book and shared our books with some year 3 and 4 children. We also went on a hunt around the school to locate pictures of different characters and we designed book marks based on our characters. We had lots of fun!

February 12th 2018

This half term the children have been doing Rugby in PE with a coach from Sale Sharks. They have played lots of tag games and learned passing skills. These are some pictures from our last session this morning.

February 7th 2018

Today we went on a walk around Weaverham. We looked at lots of important buildings a round Weaverham including the shops. We thought about how these buildings are important to our village. We also thought about how we could find our way using maps and road signs.

We have really enjoyed reading the Bog Baby. We have used this text to inspire character descriptions and have been working on using expanded noun phrases and adverbs to improve our sentences. We used the story, changing some characters and other details to help us write our own stories about finding a little creature somewhere in Weaverham.

January 9th 2018

Welcome back. I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas Holiday.

This term our the book we are studying is called Bog Baby by Jeanne Wills. The children have begun reading the book  but have not yet seen the Bog Baby so we have made up Bog Babies of our own.

PE: Please can all children have a PE kit in school from Monday to Friday. This half term, we will be doing Rugby on a Monday morning with a coach from Sale Sharks. Please can you provide your child with a dark coloured tracksuit and trainers to keep them warm outside. Also, girls will need some spare socks as tights are not to be worn during PE.

Our Autumn Term project was:

Who's the Queen of the Castle?

December 19th 2017

Today we had a lovely Art and D&T day. Thank you so much to all the helpers who came along. Here are their moving pictures. I think you will agree, they did an excellent job.

We also had a visit from Father Christmas. The children were so excited! We got some beautiful puppets for the classroom. Thanks Father Christmas.

December 14th 2017

Here are the Year 2 Stars of Lights, Camel, Action.

October 10th 2017

Today we had an amazing time on our class trip to Chirk Castle in Wales. We learned all about crime and punishment in Tudor times and visited the castle dungeon to see what it would have been like for prisoners. We learned how to fire a cannon and tried on a very heavy metal helmet. We also learned all about the clothes the rich Tudors wore and got to try some on. In the afternoon we had a tour of the castle and looked at the amazingly lavish rooms the Lord and Lady Myddleton lived in as well as visiting the very black and basic servants' hall. We were all on our best behaviour and had a wonderful time. Here are some pictures of the day.

September 18th 2017

Welcome back to the school year. It sounds as though you have all had a fantastic holiday.

The children have begun to settle in well to year 2 and have already been hard at work. Since we have been back we have been doing lots of Literacy work based around the book 'The Dragon Machine' by Helen Ward.

On the first day back we found an egg in the woods and it turned out to be a dragon's egg. We brought it into the classroom and lots of naughty dragons burst out of it and invaded our classroom. It has been so exciting!  For more informaiton about our curriculum, please click on the Curriculum Plan below.

Here is our working wall inspired by the book:

September 22nd 2017

Today in RE we learn about how Abraham followed God, even though he did not know where he was going. Then we went into the playground and led each other, with closed eyes, around the playground to see how it felt. We said it made us feel scared, worried and anxious. Abraham must have felt like that too but he had faith and followed God.

Homework will be given out every 2 weeks on a Monday and will be due in the following Monday. This will be one piece of either Maths, Literacy, Science, Topic or RE in their red homework books. For the second week, the children will be asked to concentrate on tables, spellings and reading. The children will also receive one piece of phonics homework per week.

Every 2 weeks, the children are given spellings to learn at home and at school. These words can be found at the back of their reading journal, along with the date the words will be tested. Children are given spellings on an individual basis and will only be given new ones if they are secure, both in their spelling test and in independent writing. On some occasions, children may forget words they have learned for a test so don't be surprised if words re-appear on their spellings list! Their success in learning each word will be indicated in their reading journals and a new list will be provided for the following fortnight. The aim is that they leave year 2 with a good understanding of basic spellings.

Times Tables

In Year 2, the children need to begin learning their times tables and, although we shall be doing lots of work in lessons, it would be really helpful if they could practice them at home too. They will be tested every other Thursday (weeks where they do not have written homework in their red book) and will go onto the medal table once they score 12 out of 12; Bronze (for recalling their times table in order), Silver (for answering times tables questions out of order) and Gold (for answering division questions for that table). They will begin with the 10 times table, then move on to the 2 times table, followed by the 5s and the 3s. Success of these tests will also be reported in the back of their reading journal.
